Getting to Koh Phangan and Nai Wok

Koh Phangan has no airport, which is part of its charm. Every trip ends with a boat ride across the Gulf of Thailand. It sounds complicated, but it's actually very straightforward, and once you're on the island, Nai Wok is one of the easiest spots to reach. Here's everything you need to know about getting to Koh Phangan and to Diamond Muay Thai.

Where is Nai Wok?

Nai Wok is on the west coast of Koh Phangan, right next to Thong Sala, the island's main town and ferry port. It's a quiet, local neighbourhood close to some of the island's best sunset spots, yet you're minutes from the night markets, shops and the pier.

Diamond Muay Thai is at 145/8 Moo 1, Nai Wok, Koh Phangan, Surat Thani 84280:

  • 2-minute walk to Nai Wok beach
  • 5-minute drive from Thong Sala
  • About a 15-minute walk from Thong Sala Pier

Step 1: Getting to Koh Phangan

Almost everyone arrives by ferry at Thong Sala Pier. There are three main ways to get there.

Option A: Fly to Koh Samui (USM), the fastest route

Koh Samui is Koh Phangan's big neighbour and has its own airport, with flights from Bangkok and a few other Asian hubs. From Samui, a ferry (Lomprayah or Seatran) to Thong Sala usually takes around 30–45 minutes. Boats leave from several piers around Samui, so pick the one that's easiest from where you land, and allow time for the transfer to the pier.

Best for: short trips, or if you want to arrive the same day you land in Thailand.

Option B: Fly to Surat Thani (URT), the budget route

Surat Thani on the mainland is served by cheaper domestic flights from Bangkok. At the airport you can buy a joint bus and ferry ticket that takes you all the way to Thong Sala Pier. It's a longer day, usually somewhere between roughly 3 and 7 hours door to door depending on the service, but it's often much cheaper than flying to Samui.

Best for: travellers on a budget who don't mind a longer journey.

Option C: From Bangkok by overnight bus or train

Overnight buses and trains run from Bangkok, with tickets that include the ferry crossing. You sleep on the way down and wake up close to the coast, ready for the boat. It's the cheapest option, and the overnight train is a classic Thai travel experience.

Best for: backpackers and anyone who enjoys the journey as much as the destination.

Coming from Koh Tao?

If you're already island-hopping, ferries also link Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. The crossing usually takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the boat and the sea.

Important: ferry times change with the season and the weather, so always check the latest timetable with Lomprayah or Seatran before you travel.

Step 2: From Thong Sala Pier to Nai Wok

Once you step off the ferry, the hard part's done.

  • Songthaew (shared pickup taxi): taxis are always waiting at the pier. Tell the driver you're going to Diamond Muay Thai in Nai Wok. It's a quick 5-minute ride. Fares aren't metered, so agree the price before you get in. Expect roughly 100–200B per person.
  • Walk: if you're travelling light, it's about 15 minutes on foot from the pier.

We don't run a pier pickup, simply because you won't need one: the journey is easy, and taxis are always waiting as you step off the boat.

Arriving at camp

If you're staying with us on Train & Stay, check-in is from 3pm and check-out is by midday. If your ferry gets in early, it's a great excuse to wander down to Nai Wok beach or grab a coffee at Carrot's Bar. If you're keen, the afternoon session starts at 16:00.

It's worth having a little Thai baht with you for taxis and snacks on the day you arrive. Thong Sala has plenty of ATMs. For paying for your package, we accept direct bank transfers or payment apps such as Revolut, and we recommend Wise for a good exchange rate.

Getting around Koh Phangan

  • Songthaews run between the pier and the main beaches.
  • Scooters are the most popular way to explore, and lots of our students hire one on Sundays to explore together. Roads can be steep and winding, so wear a helmet and only ride if you're experienced.
  • On foot: from Nai Wok you can walk to the beach and, on a cooler evening, into Thong Sala for the Saturday Walking Street market.

Travel tips

  • Avoid tight connections. The last ferries of the day usually leave in the late afternoon or early evening, so leave a good buffer after your flight.
  • Book ahead around Full Moon Party dates. Ferries and rooms fill up fast that week.
  • Expect choppier seas in the wet season. Around October and November, ferries can occasionally be delayed by the weather.
  • Arrive on a Saturday or Sunday if you can, so you're settled and ready for the first session on Monday morning.

See you in Nai Wok

Once you're here, everything is on your doorstep: the gym, your room, two meals a day and the beach two minutes away. Diamond Muay Thai's Train & Stay packages start from 7,000B a week (approx. $200) and include all group Muay Thai, room, meals, ice baths, yoga, fitness classes and 24/7 gym access.
