What to Pack for a Muay Thai Camp in Thailand

Packing for a Muay Thai camp is simpler than you'd think. Thailand is hot, laid-back and well stocked, and good camps provide most of the heavy kit. Here's our complete packing list, based on what our students at Diamond Muay Thai on Koh Phangan actually use, plus a few things you can happily leave at home.

First: what the camp provides

At Diamond Muay Thai, we provide the essential training gear for you to borrow free of charge:

  • Gloves
  • Shin guards
  • Hand wraps

So even if you're travelling light, you'll have everything you need from your very first session. If you'd like your own kit, our on-site shop stocks our own Diamond Muay Thai gear plus top brands like Fairtex and Twins, including shorts, shirts, quality mouthguards, and our handmade shorts and gloves. Buying in Thailand is often cheaper than at home, and it makes a great souvenir.

If you're staying with us on Train & Stay, every room has wifi and a warm shower, and towels and bedding are provided.

Training kit

  • Lightweight, breathable training clothes. Muay Thai shorts or gym shorts and quick-dry T-shirts or vests. You'll train twice a day in the heat, so pack enough to rotate: around 4–5 sets is a good start.
  • Your own mouthguard. Borrowed gear is fine, but a mouthguard should be your own for the best fit and hygiene.
  • A groin guard. Again, your own will fit best.
  • Sports bras (if needed). Bring several good ones, as you'll go through them quickly.
  • Your own gloves and wraps (optional). If you already train, you may prefer your own. Otherwise, borrow ours or buy at camp.

Recovery and health

  • A gym towel. Train & Stay rooms come with towels and bedding, but it's handy to have your own towel for sessions.
  • Antibacterial body wash or soap. Close-contact training in a tropical climate means skin care matters. Shower straight after training.
  • A basic first-aid kit. Plasters, antiseptic cream, blister care and sports tape. Pharmacies on Koh Phangan stock most things too.
  • Supplements. If you have a routine, bring your usual protein powder, electrolytes or pre-workout. (Carrot's Bar beside the mats also does protein shakes and keeps electrolytes in the fridge.)
  • Thai liniment or muscle rub. Easy to buy locally.
  • High-factor sun cream and insect repellent.
  • A reusable water bottle. You'll drink a lot.

Footwear

  • Running shoes for morning runs and conditioning.
  • Flip-flops for everything else. You train barefoot, and shoes come off before the mats.

Everyday island clothes

Koh Phangan is relaxed, so you won't need much:

  • Shorts, T-shirts and swimwear
  • A light layer for scooter rides or air-conditioned rooms
  • Something that covers your shoulders and knees for temple visits, like Wat Pho or the Chinese Temple above Chaloklum
  • A light rain jacket if you're coming in the wetter months. On Koh Phangan the heaviest rain usually falls around October and November, easing through December.

Documents and money

  • Passport with at least six months' validity, plus copies.
  • A way to pay. At Diamond, a non-refundable deposit secures your Train & Stay place, and we confirm the details when you book. We accept direct bank transfers or payment apps such as Revolut. Wise is a good option for a fair exchange rate. A bank card is handy for ATMs on the island too.
  • A driving licence with an international permit if you plan to hire a scooter. Wear a helmet and only ride if you're experienced.

Useful extras

  • A universal plug adapter and a power bank
  • A head torch for evening walks
  • A dry bag for boat trips and beach days
  • A notebook to jot down combinations from each session

What to leave at home

  • Heavy kit bags of pads. We have everything you need.
  • Too many clothes. Local express laundry services are nearby, and you'll live in shorts.
  • Expensive jewellery. You can't train in it, and the camp isn't responsible for lost items.
  • Hairdryers and bulky toiletries. Shampoo, soap and sun cream are easy to buy on the island, and there's a 7-Eleven right by the gym.

Quick checklist

  • 4–5 sets of training clothes
  • Mouthguard
  • Groin guard
  • Gym towel
  • Antibacterial soap
  • Running shoes
  • Flip-flops
  • First-aid basics
  • Sun cream and repellent
  • Water bottle
  • Passport
  • Bank card / Wise or Revolut
  • Plug adapter
